( Jack Thomas ) 2 CONT 2 CONT Various histories of the upper ohio valley have accounts of Captain John 2 CONT Baker. These accounts agree in substance, but differ in some minor details. 2 CONT He was killed by Indians in 1787, and his son John Baker, Jr. was killed by 2 CONT Indians at the same Location in 1794. ˙2 CONT Virginia ˙2 CONT born in Prussia and came to America about 1760. He arrived at Philadelphia, 2 CONT Pennsylvania and five years later married Elizabeth Sullivan of that city, 2 CONT and from there the young couple moved to the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia 2 CONT where they lived two years and from there they removed to the waters of 2 CONT Dunkard Creek, now in Greene County, pennsylvania, in the year 1767 and 2 CONT remained there seven years. At the time they lived on that creek there were 2 CONT a number of Indians residing on it and they and the whites were very 2 CONT friendly. At the breaking out of Dunmor˙2 CONT Redstone Old Fort, now Brownsville. The American revolution breaking out 2 CONT soon after the close of Dunmore˙2 CONT breaking out of the war. He remained at the fort a number of years, and was 2 CONT in the service of that Colony of Virginia much of the time during that war 2 CONT but there is little record of him ˙2 CONT 1781, where he remained a short time and then removed to Round Bottom and in 2 CONT 1784 Captain Baker built a blockhouse near the upper end of Cresap˙2 CONT This place was generally known by the name of Baker˙2 CONT now Moundsville, west Virginia ) ˙2 CONT ˙2 CONT opposite shore of the Ohio River walking about leisurely. Baker getting an 2 CONT opportunity, shot at one of them and killed him. The others ran away as if 2 CONT badly frightened, leaving the dead Indian where he fell. They did it 2 CONT evidently to deceive the whites as it was proved later by their actions. 2 CONT Baker and the two Wetzels crossed over the river and were viewing the dead 2 CONT Indian when several shots were fired and Baker fell mortally wounded The 2 CONT wetzels treed and commenced to fight and some other men crossed the rier and 2 CONT reinforced them and drove the Indians off and recovered the body of Baker. 2 CONT He had crawled a short distance from where he fell and was alive when 2 CONT recovered but he died soon after arriving at the station. He was buried on a 2 CONT flat near a stream called Grave Yard Run at the upper end of Cresap˙2 CONT Bottom. He was killed by Indians in 1787, an 2 CONC d his son John Baker, Jr. was killed by Indians at the same Location in 1794. "History of Mar 2 CONC shall County, West Virginia" by Scott Powell, gives this account: "Captain John Baker was bor 2 CONC n in Prussia and came to America about 1760. He arrived at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and fiv 2 CONC e years later married Elizabeth Sullivan of that city, and from there the young couple move 2 CONC d to the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia where they lived two years and from there they remove 2 CONC d to the waters of Dunkard Creek, now in Greene County, pennsylvania, in the year 1767 and re 2 CONC mained there seven years. At the time they lived on that creek there were a number of Indian 2 CONC s residing on it and they and the whites were very friendly. At the breaking out of Dunmor' 2 CONC s war he removed his family to Redstone Old Fort, now Brownsville. The American revolution br 2 CONC eaking out soon after the close of Dunmore's war, Indian hostilities soon folIowed the breaki 2 CONC ng out of the war. He remained at the fort a number of years, and was in the service of tha 2 CONC t Colony of Virginia much of the time during that war but there is little record of him. " H 2 CONC e went from Redstone to Catfish Camp in 1781, where he remained a short time and then remove 2 CONC d to Round Bottom and in 1784 Captain Baker built a blockhouse near the upper end of Cresap' 2 CONC s Bottom. This place was generally known by the name of Baker's Station. Baker getting an opportunity, shot at one of them and killed him. The others ra 2 CONC n away as if badly frightened, leaving the dead Indian where he fell. They did it evidently t 2 CONC o deceive the whites as it was proved later by their actions. Baker and the two Wetzels cross 2 CONC ed over the river and were viewing the dead Indian when several shots were fired and Baker fe 2 CONC ll mortally wounded. The Wetzels treed and commenced to fight and some other men crossed th 2 CONC e river and reinforced them and drove the Indians off and recovered the body of Baker. He ha 2 CONC d crawled a short distance from where he fell and was alive when recovered but he died soon a 2 CONC fter arriving at the station. Three young men were started to Fort Henr 2 CONC y at Wheeling to inform the settlers of their danger. They were Henry Baker (eighteen years o 2 CONC ld), Henry Yoho, and a man by the name of Stalnater. Only one of them reached the fort. The 2 CONC y rode along without seeing any indications of Indians until they reached the narrows on Whee 2 CONC ling Creek near the old Woods residence, when they ran into a number of Indians in ambush awa 2 CONC iting them. Stalnater shot the Indian nearest him and was in turn shot by the Indians. A bull 2 CONC et struck Yoho's horse, causing it to fall to its knees. but it quickly arose and in its frig 2 CONC ht started in the direction of the fort at the top of its speed and reached the fort and save 2 CONC d the life of its rider. A bullet struck Baker's horse which ran about one hundred yards an 2 CONC d fell dead. It fell on Baker's leg and it was with some difficulty that he freed himself fro 2 CONC m the dead horse. Seeing his danger he abandoned his gun and started for the fort in full spe 2 CONC ed but ran only a short distance when he met an Indian with a tomahawk in one hand and a pist 2 CONC ol in the other. He saw he had no chance to escape and when the Indian called to him in goo 2 CONC d English, ''You are a prisoner,'' he stopped. He was taken back to the other Indians, an 2 CONC d a brother of the warrior killed by Stalnater, wanted to kill him but was prevented by the c 2 CONC hief. With their prisoner they started for the river. They crossed the hill and went out th 2 CONC e ridge that runs just on the top of the hill along the Narrows and descended the hill at Kat 2 CONC e's Rock where they found a number of Indians in canoes as if they were awaiting the arriva 2 CONC l of the party. They embarked in canoes and descended the river a short distance and left th 2 CONC e canoes and went around the fort at the Flats of Grave Creek, keeping aloug the foot of th 2 CONC e hill and crossing Big Grave Creek not far below the mouth of Middle Grave Creek, and from t 2 CONC here they went over the hill and arrived at the river at the lower end of Round Bottom. The p 2 CONC arty crossed the river and encamped on the north side opposite the head of Captina Island. Ea 2 CONC rly the following morning they started and for three days and nights they made no halt. The 2 CONC y did not rest until they arrived at Chillicothe, having evidently been in fear of pursuit. A 2 CONC fter that they were in no hurry. They killed deer and had plenty to eat. When they arrived a 2 CONC t Sandusky three hundred Indians had just arrived from a foray against settlements in Kentuck 2 CONC y with nine prisoners. The nine young men taken by them were burned at the stake after runnin 2 CONC g the gauntlets. One was burned each day. All this time Baker was reminded frequently that hi 2 CONC s turn was coming after the nine were burned. On the morning of the tenth day Baker was take 2 CONC n to the place where they had burned the other prisoners and compelled to run the gauntlet wh 2 CONC ich he did with little difficulty. It so enraged a warrior that he knocked Baker down after h 2 CONC e had reached the council house in safety. Baker fought them and delayed them some time an 2 CONC d seeing a man riding toward them in the uniform of a British officer he ran to meet him an 2 CONC d asked him to save his life if it was possible. The man was no other than the notorius Simo 2 CONC n Girty. Girty talked with the Indians two hours or more, arguing with them and finally induc 2 CONC ed them not to burn him. Girty evidently had motives other than that of humanity, as he too 2 CONC k Baker out from the Indians and questioned him about the conditions at Wheeling and many oth 2 CONC er places, especially the former place. Baker afterwards believed that Girty contemplated a 2 CONC n attack upon Fort Henry. He was taken to Detroit and in a short time was released. He hire 2 CONC d with a trader and remained with him some time He and three Virginians concluded to return a 2 CONC nd started for Wheeling. They got lost and wandered about for three weeks before they reache 2 CONC d the Ohio River, where Bridgeport has since been built. Some men were making sugar on that s 2 CONC ide of the river and when they saw the four men approaching in Indian dress they mistook the 2 CONC m for Indians and crossed over to the island and watched them. After some time Baker and hi 2 CONC s companions made the men understand who they were and the men crossed back and brought the 2 CONC m over in a canoe. While Henry was away his father moved to the lower end of Round Bottom. H 2 CONC e learned where the family had gone and he went to it. He remained in the Round Bottom unti 2 CONC l his death, except the time spent at Tomlinsons' Fort. It 2 CONC s incidents are given below, as related by Martin Baker. 2 CONT One mile below the Captina, on the Virginia shore, was Baker;s Fort, so named after my fath 2 CONC er, One morning in May, 1794, four men were sent over, accrding to custom, to the Ohio side 2 CONC , to reconnoitre. They were Adam Miller, John Daniels, Isaac, McCowan and John Shoptaw. Mille 2 CONC r and Daniels took up stream, the other two down. The upper scouts were soon attacked by Indi 2 CONC ans and Miller killed. Daniels ran up Captina about three miles, but being weak from the Ios 2 CONC s of blood issuing from a wound in his arm was taken prisoner, into captivity, and subsequent 2 CONC ly released at the treaty of Greenville. The lower scouts having discovered signs of the enem 2 CONC y, Shoptaw swam across the Ohio and escaped; but McCowan, going up towards the canoe, was sho 2 CONC t by Indians in ambush. Upon this, he ran down the bank and sprang into the water, pursued b 2 CONC y the enemy, who overtook and scalped him. The firing being heard at the fort, they beat up f 2 CONC or volunteers, there being about fifty men in the fort. Being much reluctance among them to v 2 CONC olunteer my sister exclaimed, She wouldn't be a coward, This aroused the pride of my brother 2 CONC , John Baker, who before had determined not to go. He joined the others, fourteen in number 2 CONC , including Captain Abram Enochs. They soon crossed the river and went up Captina in single f 2 CONC ile, a distance of a mile and a half, following the Indian trail. The enemy came back on thei 2 CONC r trails, and were in ambush on the hillside, awaiting their approach. When sufficiently near 2 CONC , they fired on our people, but being on an elevated position, their balls passed harmless ov 2 CONC er them. The whites then treed. Some of the Indians came behind and shot Captain Enochs and M 2 CONC r. Hoffman. Our people soon retreated, and the Indians pursued but a short distance. On thei 2 CONC r retreat my brother was shot in the hip. Determined to sell his life as dearly as possible 2 CONC , he drew off one side and secreted himself in a hollow, with a rock at his back, offering n 2 CONC o chance for the enemy to approach but in front. Shortly after, two shots were heard in quic 2 CONC k succession . Doubtless, one of them was fired by my brother, and from the signs afterward 2 CONC , it was supposed he had killed an Indian, The next day the men turned out and visited the sp 2 CONC ot. Enochs, Hoffman and John Baker were found dead and scalped. Enochs bowels were torn out h 2 CONC is eyes, and those of Hoffman, screwed out with a wiping stick. The dead were wrapped in whit 2 CONC e hickorybark and brought over, to the Virginia shore and buried in their bark coffins, Ther 2 CONC e were about thirty Indians engaged in this action, and seven skeletons of their slain were f 2 CONC ound long after, secreted in the crevices of rocks.'' The youngest man among the whites in th 2 CONC is action, was Duncan McArthur, afterwards Governor of Ohio.
